For Cisco’s Social Impact and Inclusion team, we’re seeing first-hand how AI’s greatest promise is not just in what it can do, but how—and for whom—it delivers.
AI’s Momentum—and Our Responsibility
The pace of AI adoption is unprecedented: in 2024, 78% of organizations reported using AI in at least one business function, up from 55% the previous year. As these numbers climb, our responsibility grows. The future we build with AI depends not just on innovation, but on ensuring every advancement is matched by a commitment to ethical, inclusive, and human-centered design.
AI is a tool—one with transformative power. How we wield that tool determines whether it becomes a force for good or a source of unintended harm. That’s why, as we shape AI’s role across the world, we must put people at the center, guided by a clear sense of Purpose and responsibility.
Redefining Ethical AI: More Than Compliance
Ethical AI isn’t just about ticking regulatory boxes or following the law. It’s about building systems that promote inclusion and fairness—anticipating risks and working proactively to prevent harm. This is especially critical in social impact, where AI’s reach extends to communities and individuals whose voices have too often been overlooked or marginalized.
Consider how large language models and generative AI are trained. If biased data goes in, biased results come out. Studies have shown how AI can reinforce long-standing prejudices, from who is pictured as a “doctor” versus a “janitor,” to which communities are represented as “beautiful” or “successful.” These aren’t hypothetical risks—they’re real-world consequences that affect real people, every day.
That’s why at Cisco, our Responsible AI Framework is built on core principles: fairness, transparency, accountability, privacy, security, and reliability. We don’t just talk about these values—we operationalize them. We audit our data, involve diverse perspectives in design and testing, and continually monitor outcomes to detect and mitigate bias. Ethical AI also means broadening access: ensuring that as AI reshapes work, opportunity is available to all—not just those with the most resources or experience.
Demystifying AI and Expanding Opportunity
There’s understandable anxiety about AI and jobs. While AI is changing the way we work, the greatest opportunity lies with those who learn how to use these new tools effectively. Adapting and gaining skills in AI can help individuals stay competitive in an evolving job market. That’s why demystifying AI and democratizing skills training are essential. Through initiatives like the Cisco Networking Academy and collaborations with nonprofits, we’re opening doors for communities, making AI literacy and hands-on experience accessible from the ground up. Our vision is a future where everyone, regardless of background, can participate in and shape the AI revolution.
AI for Impact: From Crisis Response to Empowerment
The promise of AI for good is tangible in the work our global ecosystem is driving every day:
- Combating Human Trafficking: Cisco is partnering with organizations such as Marriott and the Internet Watch Foundation, providing Cisco Umbrella technology to help block harmful online content and support efforts to fight human trafficking across thousands of hotel properties. Additionally, Cisco is collaborating with Splunk and The Global Emancipation Network to leverage AI-powered analytics that help uncover trafficking networks and assist law enforcement in protecting victims.
- Economic Empowerment and Food Security: In Malawi, Cisco supports Opportunity International’s CoLab and the FarmerAI app by providing resources and technology expertise. These initiatives are helping smallholder farmers access real-time advice to maximize crop yields, improve soil health, and strengthen their families’ livelihoods.
- Access to Clean Water: Through a partnership with charity: water, Cisco funds and supplies IoT and AI solutions to monitor rural water pumps in Uganda. These Cisco-supported technologies predict maintenance needs, helping ensure communities maintain uninterrupted access to safe water.
These examples are just the beginning. Across climate resilience, health, education, and beyond, responsible AI is catalyzing change where it’s needed most.
