macOS AirPlay Receiver: “Unable to connect” from other devices to Mac

I have my MacBook Pro (M2 Max) running macOS Sequoia 15.7.1.

I have “AirPlay receiver” turned on in settings. I would like to be able to present something from my iPhone to the MacBook Pro over AirPlay.

Whenever I try to connect via AirPlay from the iPhone, it just says “Unable to connect to {mac name}.” It doesn’t matter if I try to share the whole screen, or just try to send some audio from the Podcasts app, or what. Same error every time.

It doesn’t matter what options I pick on the Mac side for the AirPlay receiver. (Require password, who is allowed to AirPlay, etc.) The error occurs even if I set it to the “loosest” possible settings. The only thing that makes a difference is turning off the AirPlay receiver entirely, which (naturally) causes the Mac not to appear to other devices as an AirPlay target. But if I turn it back on, it still does not work, I get the same error.

I tried it from an iPad that belongs to someone else and they get the same error. So, it seems to be something with my Mac. Both the iPhone and iPad can AirPlay to other devices like my Apple TV without issue. (…The Mac also can AirPlay out, it is just “receiving” content that doesn’t work.)

I found a Reddit thread about this and the suggestion that seemed to work for a lot of people was just to log both devices out of iCloud and then log them back in. I did this, and it was a pain (have to set up Wallet cards again, some apps needed iCloud file sync stuff set up again, etc.) — and in the end, it didn’t help, I still get the same error.

I also tried it from a different account on the Mac and that makes no difference, same error.

It was working fine a few months ago. I have no idea what changed to break it. Any ideas on how to resolve this error?
