AI has changed the demand for IT professionals in at least two profound ways.

First, as IT systems grow more complex and as advanced networks are needed to support AI workloads, organizations around the world require advanced expertise to design, manage, and maintain their networks.

Second, at the entry-level part of the skills spectrum, we’re finding that foundational networking is more important than ever.

A recent LinkedIn study found a shortage of skills such as racking and cabling, even as the workforce skills up on AI. This is true even though some rote tasks may be automated or performed by an AI. So IT professionals still need to be able to do basic tasks, but they also need the knowledge and critical thinking skills to guide an AI. If an AI is making mistakes, those need to be addressed before the organization suffers negative consequences. IT professionals, even at the beginning of their careers, are asked to do the work of managers—it’s just that they’re managing an AI rather than a colleague.

At Cisco Networking Academy, we want to ensure our graduates are prepared to do all this work. We’ve been adjusting our existing portfolio to emphasize the skills needed to keep networks reliable and secure in the age of AI. We’ve introduced new courses to teach students how to use AI in different parts of their work. And we’re incorporating more project-based learning to help students develop critical thinking skills and apply them to networking challenges.

Historically, Cisco Networking Academy has offered access to skills that will enable students to earn their Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification. The CCNA is the industry’s foundational networking certification that validates essential skills in installing, operating, configuring, and verifying IPv4 and IPv6 networks.

Given the rapid changes in the industry, some academies and some students have asked for more. They want to be able to teach and learn the skills needed to earn a Professional-level Cisco certification: the Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP).

The CCNP certification is one of the most recognized credentials in the networking field. This certification prepares individuals for in-demand roles such as network engineer, systems engineer, and network architect. For students who begin their journey with NetAcad, the CCNP represents a major milestone.

I am pleased to say that we’re now adding two newly updated Professional-level networking courses to Cisco Networking Academy: CCNP Enterprise: Core Networking and CCNP Enterprise: Advanced Routing. These courses bring existing Cisco U. content to a broader audience, making advanced learning more accessible than ever before. Both courses are fully aligned with the latest CCNP certification exams, ensuring that learners are preparing to earn industry-recognized credentials.

Earlier versions of CCNP content were available through the Cisco Networking Academy, but the current offerings are a significant step forward, with a Professional-level curriculum sourced directly from Cisco U.

Learners can expect updated and expanded hands-on labs, including exercises using classroom equipment, Cisco Packet Tracer, and Cisco Modeling Labs. These practical components are paired with comprehensive assessments that reflect the level of preparation required for professional certification. Together, they create a learning experience that is both rigorous and highly relevant.

These new courses include enhancements for hands-on, instructor-led learning and will be offered exclusively through accredited academies. This approach ensures that learners benefit from guided instruction, mentorship, and hands-on practice in a structured environment. This helps them prepare for the exam while also building the confidence and experience needed to succeed in the workplace.

It also reflects our continuing investment in the Cisco Networking Academy ecosystem, as we look to provide additional value to instructors, help support students’ critical thinking skills, and strengthen the learning experience.

Go from beginner to professional-level expertise with CCNP courses

With the addition of these new CCNP courses, Cisco Networking Academy offers a clear and structured path for learners to grow from beginner to professional-level expertise.

For many, the journey often begins with CCST Networking, which is well-suited for high school students. From there, learners can progress to CCNA, typically aligned with college-level study. CCNP courses represent the next step, designed for those ready to reach a more advanced level of skill and knowledge.

For those who choose to continue, opportunities extend to expert-level learning through Cisco U., including the potential to pursue Expert-level certifications such as the CCIE. In the past two years, 23 percent of new CCIEs started their networking journeys as Cisco Networking Academy students.

By expanding access to advanced courses such as CCNP Enterprise: Core Networking and CCNP: Advanced Routing, we’re helping more learners take the next step toward meaningful careers, building a stronger, more inclusive workforce for the future.
