What happens when the sysadmin community meets a modern developer movement? BayLISA and DevNet, that’s what😎!

    What is BayLISA?

BayLISA stands for Bay Area Large Installation System Administrators and is a user group of system and network administrators from the San Francisco Bay Area. The user group was founded in the very early 1990s after the fourth Large Installation System Administration (LISA) conference. BayLISA meets monthly to discuss topics of interest to administrators and managers of sites supporting more than 100 users and/or computers. The idea was to provide a forum for Sysadmin professionals in the San Francisco Bay area to get together and exchange ideas, hear speakers address topics of interest and most importantly, socialize. The meetings are free and open to the public. BayLISA has supported and educated systems, network, storage, virtualization, and other technology professionals in the Bay Area for over 30 years. You can find more details about the user group at and

    BayLISA meets Cisco DevNet

Alright, where does Cisco DevNet come into the picture? The story of the collaboration between BayLISA and Cisco DevNet starts in the second half of 2023. As people were starting to go back to in-person events, I had the privilege of being a speaker at the DeveloperWeek CloudX 2023 conference in San Mateo, California. There I met Ron Pagani, one of the BayLISA organizers. After a couple of year hiatus from running the monthly meetups, Ron was looking at getting back to in-person events. At Cisco DevNet we were looking at growing our members community at that time so Ron and I thought that we could collaborate in a way that is beneficial for everyone. This collaboration would mean at first finding space on the Cisco campus in San Jose where we could run the monthly meetup. As a follow up to that, we were also able to suggest speakers and be members on the BayLISA board.

We’ve had a successful 2024, running several meetups on the Cisco Campus in San Jose but for this year we decided to change location. For the foreseeable future we’ll run the meetup at 3350 Scott Blvd Building 54, Santa Clara, CA 95054 in the Ding Ding Studio. You should double check the location of the meetup at just in case and also please RSVP at this link so that we know that you plan on joining us so that we can better organize the logistics for the event. Besides topics of interest and fantastic people that you can interact and chat with, there’s also pizza and refreshments for everyone. We also try to help people that are looking for jobs or that have positions opened on their teams or in their company by offering a space to make those important connections and sharing information.

    Live streaming

While people living in the Bay Area are more than welcome to join our monthly meetup, we know not everyone can attend in person. We also want to expose the knowledge shared in our meetup to a larger on-line audience. So we’ve decided to live stream the BayLISA monthly meetups on the Cisco DevNet social media platforms, including YouTube, LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Twitch and Facebook.

The meetup takes place on the third Thursday of the month, so make sure you save that in your calendars. We’ll also have the live streaming sessions scheduled in advance so that you can see what the topic of the session will be as well as speakers and timing. As the sessions are recorded, you can also view the recordings online. For YouTube, I’ve created a playlist at this link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2k86RlAekM_r-_3uDdU4P2o4kLRF6VnB. You can already find there the recording of the session for the month of April. We’ve had Madhupriya Ravishankar and Tianhong Zhang from Oracle presenting Converged Database: JSON Meets Relational for the Modern Era.

Whether you’re a Bay Area local or tuning in from afar, follow DevNet on your favorite platform to stay plugged into systems and network administration.
