Hyundai Motor Company today unveiled two documentary films highlighting the achievements of its collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations (UN) agency addressing global food insecurity.

The first film — Typhoon’s Way: A Philippine Story — sheds light on WFP’s operations in the Philippines and the role of donated Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric vehicles (EVs) in those efforts. The second film — Driving Sustainable Relief: Hyundai IONIQ 5 with the World Food Programme — shows how the broader deployment of IONIQ 5s, along with new EV charging and solar photovoltaic (PV) infrastructure, strengthens the organization’s sustainable humanitarian operations. Additionally, the films highlight how IONIQ 5’s technological features enable humanitarian missions while reducing their environmental footprint.

“At Hyundai, we recognize our responsibility to address climate change, to develop technology that changes how people and goods move. Together with WFP, we will listen and learn from field operations to help responders reach people sooner and more safely. This meaningful partnership supports aid efforts and delivers tangible results towards cutting emissions and achieving carbon neutrality, fostering sustainable humanitarian activities as part of Hyundai’s vision of ‘Progress for Humanity.” —Sung Kim, President for Strategic Planning at Hyundai Motor Group

“As the UN system advances the Secretary-General’s UN80 vision, partnerships that align innovation with humanitarian purpose are critical to delivering impact at scale. WFP’s partnership with Hyundai Motor Company demonstrates how such collaboration can further strengthen the operational foundations of humanitarian action. Through investments in energy efficiency and electric mobility, Hyundai Motor Company is supporting WFP to further modernize its operations, reduce environmental impact, and enhance our ability to reach the world’s most vulnerable — now and into the future.” —Sara Adam, Director of Management Services Division, WFP

What Are the Achievements of the Partnership to Date?

Hyundai Motor’s donation stems from the partnership signed with WFP in July 2024. In October 2024, the company delivered eight IONIQ 5 vehicles to the WFP Fleet Centre in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), where they were adapted for field use and dispatched to WFP offices around the world.

Alongside the EV rollout, Hyundai Motor supported the installation of EV-charging infrastructure as well as 14 solar PV systems at facilities across 12 countries, aligned with WFP’s broader Energy Efficiency Programme. Collectively, these systems will meet over 80 percent of participating offices’ power needs, on average, and are projected to save approximately USD522,000 annually in operating costs.

By supporting lower-emission mobility and more access to renewable energy solutions, Hyundai Motor is enabling WFP to carry out its work through more sustainable and resilient practices. This support helps maintain operational continuity in remote and climate-affected locations — a practical contribution as climate-related issues place increasing pressure on global food security.

How Do Hyundai Motor’s Innovations Support Sustainable Humanitarian Operations?

The documentary showcases the collaboration between Hyundai Motor and WFP, focusing on WFP’s work in the Philippines following 2024’s Typhoon Christine. Through the lens of Ian James Secillano, a member of the local emergency response agency, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, and WFP Programme Policy Officer Alice Follosco, the film highlights how the IONIQ 5 fleet can help teams reach food-insecure communities more quickly and sustainably.

The partnership film further highlights Hyundai Motor’s collaboration with WFP, showcasing the advanced technologies integrated into IONIQ 5 EVs and their effectiveness in supporting disaster relief efforts.

Hyundai Motor has incorporated cutting-edge features into its donated IONIQ 5 EVs, enhancing their performance in challenging environments. One such feature is the transparent metal-coated heating glass technology, a Hyundai Motor world-first development. This innovation coats the windshield with thin layers of metal, such as silver, enabling the glass to emit heat using only 48 volts of electricity. This ensures rapid removal of frost, snow and moisture while blocking up to 60 percent of solar energy, making the vehicles suitable for extreme weather conditions.

IONIQ 5 also boasts eco-friendly long-range capabilities and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, enabling the vehicle to power emergency communication devices in areas without electricity. Additional features include on-board refrigerators, which allow field workers to safely transport temperature-sensitive supplies, further enhancing the vehicles’ contributions to relief missions.

Through its partnership with WFP, Hyundai Motor reaffirms its commitment to ‘Progress for Humanity’ by supporting sustainable and innovative humanitarian solutions.
